Toelichting bij 'Gimme hope Jo'anna' van Eddy Grant:

Eddy Grant is een Guyaans-Britse zanger, geboren in 1948. In 1965, op 17-jarige leeftijd, richtte Eddy Grant de band ‘The Equals’ op en scoorde de jaren nadien verschillende hits waaronder het bekende ‘Baby come back’ dat een nummer 1 hit werd in de UK. Eddy Grant verliet de groep en startte een solocarrière. Ook als solo-artiest was Eddy Grant bijzonder succesvol met onder andere de hitsingles ‘I don’t wanna dance’, ‘Electric Avenue’ en uiteraard ook ‘Gimme hope Jo’anna’.

‘Gimme hope Jo’anna’ is protestsong uit 1988 tegen het het apartheidsregime in Zuid-Afrika. Apartheid was een officieel ingesteld systeem van rassenscheiding (rassenseggregatie) dat de blanke minderheid in Zuid-Afrika oplegde aan de zwarte meerderheid. Op deze wijze kon de blanke minderheid de macht stevig in handen houden. Het systeem was van kracht vanaf 1948 tot begin jaren '90 en lokte wereldwijd hevig protest uit.

In ‘Gimme hope Jo’anna’ roept Eddy Grant de regering in Zuid-Afrika op om het apartheidsregime te beëindigen en hoop te geven aan de bevolking.

Interessante weetjes over Eddy Grant en ‘Gimme hope Jo’anna’:

Op 1 januari 1971 kreeg Eddy Grant een hartaanval en een ingeklapte long. Hij was toen 23 jaar. Hij besliste vervolgens om ‘The Equals’ te verlaten.
De Zuid-Afrikaanse regering verbood tijdens het apartheidsregime het spelen van het nummer 'Gimme hope Jo'anna' in Zuid-Afrika.
