Toelichting bij 'Sunday bloody sunday' van U2:

U2 is een Ierse rockband die in 1976 werd opgericht in Dublin. In het midden van de jaren '80 werd U2 een internationale topband met een ijzersterke live reputatie. Sinds hun doorbraak zijn ze niet meer weg te denken uit de internationale rockscene.

Sunday Bloody Sunday gaat over Bloody Sunday uit 1972. Op zondag 30 januari begonnen Britse para's zonder aanleiding het vuur te openen op een vreedzame protestmars voor burgerrechten in de Noord-Ierse stad Derry. 13 mensen werden gedood waaronder maar liefst 6 zeventienjarigen.

De song opent met de zin 'This is not a rebel song, this is Sunday Bloody Sunday'. Hiermee verwijst Bono naar de Ierse protestsong 'Rebel Song''. Deze song was in de jaren '80 verboden op de Britse radio.

De gebeurtenissen van Bloody Sunday zijn ook verfilmd door Paul Greengrass in de film Bloody Sunday.

 

Interessant weetje over U2:

U2 werd opgericht in 1976 en kreeg als groepsaam Feedback. In 1978 werd de naam veranderd in The Hype om kort nadien opnieuw gewijzigd te worden in de naam U2. Deze naam verwijst naar het Amerikaanse spionagevliegtuig met dezelfde naam.
